When buying ACR copper tube for air conditioning, refrigeration, HVACR installation or heat exchanger production, choosing the right copper tube standard is just as important as choosing the right size. Two buyers may order the same copper material from the same production line, but one needs ASTM B280 copper tube for inch-based markets while the other needs EN 12735 copper tube for metric refrigeration systems.

If the wrong standard is written on the purchase order, the result can be costly: inch tubes arrive where metric fittings are waiting, R220 temper is confused with soft annealed coil, or the inspection document does not match what customs, consultants or project engineers require.

What Is EN 12735 Copper Tube?

EN 12735 copper tube is commonly used in Europe, the UK and other metric-size HVACR markets. It is the European standard for seamless round copper tubes used in air conditioning and refrigeration.

EN 12735 is usually divided into two important parts:

  • EN 12735-1: copper tubes for field piping systems

  • EN 12735-2: copper tubes for equipment, such as chillers, condensers, evaporators and heat exchangers

Difference 1: Inch Sizes vs Metric Sizes

The first and most common mistake is size conversion.

ASTM B280 uses inch sizes such as 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8". EN 12735 uses metric sizes such as 10mm, 12mm and 15mm. Although some sizes look close, they are not always interchangeable.

For example, 3/8" copper tube is 9.52mm outside diameter. It is not the same as 10mm copper tube. If your project uses 10mm metric fittings, ordering 3/8" ASTM B280 tube may cause leakage, fitting mismatch or installation delay.

Difference 2: Temper Designations

  • Soft annealed / R220 is suitable for pancake coil and easy bending.

  • Half-hard / R250 is used when better shape stability is needed.

  • Hard drawn / R290 is usually supplied as straight length copper tube.


Difference 3: Cleanliness for Refrigerant Service

For ACR copper tube, internal cleanliness is critical. Copper tube used for refrigeration systems must have a clean inner surface because oil residue, carbon residue or moisture may affect refrigerant performance.

This is especially important for modern refrigerants and compressor oils, including R410A, R32, R290, R600a and other HVACR applications.


Difference 4: Marking and Inspection Documents

For EN 12735 copper tube, many European buyers request EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificates. Tube marking may include standard number, size, material, temper and manufacturer identification.

For ASTM B280 copper tube, buyers often request mill test reports, material certificates and packing labels showing size, coil weight, standard and batch number.
